Property Tax Exemptions

Property Tax Exemptions

In 2011, Toronto City Council approved a plan to exempt 383 TCHC buildings (53,623 units) from municipal education and property taxes and redirect the tax savings to fund capital repairs to TCHC buildings.

The Canada Revenue Agency advises taxpayers that they should not include rent paid for a principal residence that was not subject to property tax when claiming the Ontario Trillium Benefit. The Ontario Trillium Benefit is a provincial program that is administered by the Canada Revenue Agency, which can provide more information on the Benefit.

Check your building's tax status

Below is linked a list of TCHC properties and their tax status. The list is organized by street address number and includes properties that TCHC pays municipal education and property taxes on and properties that are tax exempt.

Knowing the property tax status of your home is important information that could inform how you file your taxes. We recommend that tenants seek advice from a tax professional before filing their taxes, including when considering a claim for the Ontario Trillium Benefit. While TCHC does not provide such advice, it may be available to TCHC tenants through tax clinics listed below.

As of March 4, 2022, 100 per cent of TCHC properties are on the list.

  • Use the "Find" tool to search for your street address. The line with your street address will show your building's tax status.
  • If you are using a desktop or laptop computer, open the "Find" tool from the Edit menu or press CTRL+F on a Windows PC or CMD⌘+F on an Apple computer.
  • If you are using a mobile device, the "Find" tool location may differ by manufacturer. Often, it can be located in the Settings menu (usually indicated by three dots or lines) or by tapping the magnifying glass icon on your PDF viewer.
