Updated Media Statement: Fire at 607 The East Mall

TORONTO, March 19, 2019—Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) activated its emergency response plan this afternoon to assist tenants affected by a major fire at 607 The East Mall.

Toronto Community Housing thanks Toronto Fire Services for their effective response in putting out the fire, and thanks all first responders who attended to assist our tenants. Our thoughts are with those who were injured in the fire.

The safety and well-being of our tenants is top priority. We are cooperating fully with the investigation being conducted by Toronto Fire Services into the cause of the fire.

The fire was contained to 607 The East Mall. It affected 19 units and as many as 80 tenants have been displaced. All tenants of 607 The East Mall are being advised that they will be unable to return to their homes this evening and for the next several days.

TCHC has set up a reception room at 609 The East Mall, where staff are onsite to provide supports, including arranging for temporary accommodation for displaced tenants, providing meals and water, arranging to retrieve medications and other critical items, and helping tenants to contact family members and others.
