TCHC Community Safety Unit: Our approach to safety

Did you know: Our Community Safety Unit (CSU) work to keep TCHC communities safe goes beyond enforcement and the use of patrols, special constables and third-party security. During National Police Week 2021, we take a look at the CSU's comprehensive, integrated approach to community safety.

CSU's approach to community safety includes:

1. Using a comprehensive, integrated approach.

Examples include community involvement in safety planning, partnerships with the police and other key stakeholders, and dispute resolution.

2. Identifying alternative activities for youth.

Examples include volunteerism, after-school activities, sports programs.

3. Developing stronger, less vulnerable individuals.

Examples include safety awareness, safety training, and proactive wellness checks on vulnerable persons.

4. Supporting safer work environments.

Examples include health and safety approaches and assessing level of risk in communities.

5. Preventing and deterring wrongdoing.

Examples include improved surveillance using strategies and programs such as joint patrols with police officers, and special constables and third-party security guards.

6. Displacement of potential and actual offenders.

Examples include trespass, eviction for cause, and warrants and arrests.

7. Developing safer physical environments.

Examples include safety audits to identify environmental design changes to prevent crime: cameras, better lighting, better landscaping, removing physical risks, parking enforcement, fire safety and access control.

The Community Safety Unit team consists of special constables, parking enforcement officers, dispatchers, community safety advisors and other management and administrative staff.
