Changes allow housing providers to keep out evicted criminals

TORONTO, September 23, 2019 — Ontario's Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark joined by Toronto Mayor John Tory today announced changes that give housing providers the discretion to refuse to rehouse tenants who have been evicted for serious crimes and pose a threat to the community.

"I want to thank the Province and the City for listening to our concerns and giving us the authority to say 'no' when bad actors who we have already been evicted for committing serious crimes on our properties apply to be rehoused," said TCHC CEO Kevin Marshman. "This is a great example of governments working together to protect the safety of law-abiding tenants and their families."

The announcement took place this afternoon at Toronto Community Housing's headquarters at 931 Yonge St.
