We’ve updated our Elections Policy
Learn more about the changes and what they mean for tenants and staff.
Did you know that Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) has official guidelines for how staff and Board members must conduct themselves during any election period? These guidelines are outlined in our Elections Policy, a resource that also covers corporate and tenant responsibilities and expectations during any election period.
Updated policy
We reviewed and updated the Elections Policy this year. Here's what has changed in the recent update:
- Election signs can be placed outside of balconies (they must be safely secured).
- If All Candidates Meetings are held on TCHC property, TCHC may restrict the participation of candidates, parties, or groups if we are concerned that their participation may promote hatred or violence. TCHC has the right to remove individuals who engage in hateful behaviour, incite violence, etc. from our property.
- New restrictions for TCHC’s Executive Leadership Team on campaigning or canvassing for a candidate/party.
Other key points to know
Political candidates, campaign staff, and campaign volunteers have the right to enter TCHC buildings to canvass and/or deliver campaign materials door-to-door. Both staff and tenants should allow them access to do these activities, if they are done respectfully. If you believe a candidate, political party, or volunteer is harassing you or engaging in anti-social behaviour during canvassing, report it to the Client Care Centre.
Tenants can put elections signs anywhere that is in their personal unit. This is space like your balcony, fenced-off yards, and/or ground-level fences attached to your unit. You are not allowed to put an election sign in interior or exterior common areas.
We do not share tenant information with political parties, candidates, or their teams.
Next election
The next election is the upcoming municipal election on Monday, October 26, 2026.
