Toronto Community Housing moves another step closer to completing the Tenant Engagement System Refresh
(TORONTO) June 10, 2019—Following extensive tenant consultations in 2018 and 2019, Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) is continuing its progress toward having a new tenant engagement model in place by the end of the year.
The proposed engagement model and implementation plan were approved by the Tenant Services Committee on May 31, 2019. Both will be considered for approval by the TCHC Board of Directors later this month.
TCHC will conduct an awareness campaign to inform tenants about the new model and the process that tenants will use to select the local engagement approach that is right for their community.
In 2018, TCHC engagement staff held hundreds of meetings across the city, hearing from thousands of tenants about ways the engagement system can support tenants in working with TCHC and community partners to achieve local priorities for their communities. TCHC engaged with more than 16,000 tenants through the various engagement activities during this period.
In early 2019, after hearing of concerns about how tenants would be involved at the building and community level, TCHC paused the implementation plan to address the concerns and develop solutions to potential issues.
Under the proposed tenant engagement system, tenants will be able to choose the engagement model that best fits their community, from three options:
- Community representatives
- Building/townhouse committee
- Tenant association
TCHC thanks the Tenant Representatives who have continued in their roles while the new system is being implemented. TCHC is currently developing a transition plan to guide the successful implementation of the refreshed engagement system. The transition plan is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks.
"The proposed changes to the tenant engagement system have been developed with input from tenants. They are designed to increase tenant participation and offer tenants more opportunities for local decision-making. By addressing tenant-identified priorities, TCHC is committed to building vibrant communities that are accessible, diverse, inclusive and collaborative."
