Toronto Community Housing marks milestone in Regent Park revitalization as new building at 150 River St. opens its doors to tenants
TORONTO, December 15, 2019—Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC), The City of Toronto and The Daniels Corporation welcomed tenants returning to Regent Park with a holiday open house and ribbon cutting at 150 River St. today.
The new building at 150 River St. includes 125 TCHC (rent-geared-to-income) units and 33 new affordable (below market rent) rental units. Tenants will begin moving in this week.
With the opening of the 158-unit building, more than half the original 2,083 homes that were in Regent Park when the revitalization began in 2006 have been replaced or are under construction on the 69-acre urban revitalization project.
To date, the revitalization has built 1,662 TCHC units, including nearly 400 new affordable rental units. When the revitalization is completed, there will be more than 2,400 TCHC rental apartments and townhomes, more than 5,400 new market condominiums and more than 300 market rent apartments in the Regent Park community.
Mayor Tory was joined by TCHC Board Vice-Chair Brian Smith, Ward 13 Toronto Centre Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam and The Daniels Corporation Vice President of Project Implementation Jacob Cohen at the morning event at 150 River St.
The Regent Park revitalization is one of seven active TCHC revitalization projects in Toronto designed to provide a mix of quality, affordable, rental and market housing in neighbourhoods where social housing has traditionally dominated, and where the need for newer housing and improved community amenities has been identified. Regent Park was Canada's first social housing development.
