TCHC distributes $35,000 in donated food and restaurant gift cards to food insecure households

TORONTO, August 26, 2021—Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) distributed $35,000 in donated food and restaurant gift cards to food insecure households in the downtown core this summer, thanks to donors DiamondCorp, Fitzrovia, Tricon Residential and CentreCourt, Metropia, State Building Group, Choice Properties and Tridel.

TCHC staff, donor representatives, and donors took a moment on August 20 to thank all the participants and donors of the program. They were joined by Ward 13 Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam, who thanked all the donors for supporting tenants and the community, including local restaurants.

TCHC has worked with partners throughout the pandemic to identify additional ways to support tenants during this unprecedented period. TCHC employees have worked with volunteer networks, partner agencies and food bank providers to deliver food and to help fill gaps in food security to assist vulnerable households. While many individuals experiencing food insecurity in the past could turn to a food bank, including those located in TCHC buildings, that support network has now been extended through the generous support of partners.

The $100 vouchers and gift cards provided support to all age demographics: children, adults, seniors and family units.

QUOTES

"Access to food security has been a key challenge during the pandemic, and the food cards were welcomed by households in our Shuter, Dundas and lower Yonge communities. TCHC is grateful to all the donors and community support, and we will continue to work in collaboration with our external partners and donors as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolds to support tenants with food security needs."

— TCHC President and CEO Jag Sharma

"The COVID Restaurant Fund is a wonderful example of the good we can do when partners come together to identify a need, pool resources and work collaboratively to make a direct impact."
