Statement by Toronto Community Housing: 245 Dunn Ave. fire

TORONTO, August 2, 2021—Toronto Community Housing has issued this statement concerning the fire this afternoon at 245 Dunn Avenue. 

We are saddened by the loss of life as a result of the fire. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the deceased, and the entire 245 Dunn Ave. community.

We thank the Toronto Fire, Toronto Paramedic and Toronto Police first responders for their actions in putting out the fire, which started in a single unit on the 20th floor. 

At this time, we have no information about the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage to the building. We are fully cooperating with Toronto Fire, Toronto Police and the Ontario Fire Marshal personnel who are investigating the incident.

Our Community Safety Unit and Operations staff are at the building tonight to assist with the response and provide supports for tenants, including shelter needs for tenants who cannot return home tonight.

The building's fire alarm and life safety systems were operating as normal at the time of the fire. 

245 Dunn Ave. is a 20-storey Toronto Community Housing apartment building with 384 rent-geared-to-income units. It is located near the intersection of Queen Street West and Lansdowne Avenue.
