Regent Park Dazzles at “Sewing the Climate” Fashion Show

The Regent Park community came alive at their "Sewing the Climate" fashion show, a much-anticipated event that brought the community together in support of local designers and talented creatives from the Regent Park community.

Regent Park residents showcased their skills in every facet of the event – from local designers featuring their original, eco-friendly clothing and accessories on the runway, to the supporting cast of resident makeup artists, caterers and performers whose own work could easily take centre stage. The community dazzled both on and off the runway!

Hundreds gathered at this unique, formal affair that spotlighted the unique creations of resident designers and celebrated the vibrancy of the Regent Park community. Organizers distributed certificates to the featured designers to acknowledge their achievements.

TCHC's community partner, the Toronto Centre for Learning and Development (TCLD) hosted this innovative event that helped to bring the work of TCLD's latest cohort of Regent Park Sewing Studio (RPSS) graduates and all participating talent, to an audience of potential customers, small business supporters and influencers.

TCHC is proud to co-sponsor this event with Tridel and United Way, and support the day-to-day work of TCLD in the community through RPSS, a program that strengthens the social fabric of the Regent Park community by bringing people together and teaching employable skills to help people break the cycle of poverty.

One resident participant, Hajera, shared her experience with TCLD's sewing group:

"I've always been interested in sewing because I grew up watching my dad sew since he used to work as a tailor. However since he was busy with work it was hard to find the time to learn from him. Luckily one day I stumbled upon a flyer for a beginner sewing class right in the neighbourhood so I emailed Adriana [TCLD organizer] right then and there to secure a spot and also ended up taking the advance class right after too.

I also had looked into fashion programs before but would be intimidated since I needed to have some knowledge and skills of sewing. Thankfully through the sewing classes provided at the TCLD I felt more confident about applying to a fashion design program, which I'll be starting this month."
