Media Statement: Incident at 248 Simcoe St.

TORONTO, April 11, 2019 — Toronto Community Housing has released the following statement today concerning the incident at 248 Simcoe St.

"We place a top priority on the safety of our tenants, and are very concerned about this incident. We thank first responders for their efforts to rescue the person who fell and transport him to the hospital. We are cooperating fully with the investigation and are providing supports to tenants of 248 Simcoe St. who may be experiencing stress following the incident.

"Based on damage to the elevator door which occurred today, we believe the cause of the incident was vandalism. Both of the building's elevators were newly installed in September 2018, and both were in good working order at the time of the incident and had passed all recent safety inspections.

"Elevator service has been restored for the first elevator of the building. We will begin work immediately to repair the second elevator and restore full service for our tenants after the investigation scene has been released.

"We will not be making further comment on the incident at this time."
