Media Statement: 200 Wellesley St. E. fire

TORONTO, November 8, 2019 — Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) thanks Toronto Fire Services for their prompt actions this morning in extinguishing a fire that broke out on the ninth floor of TCHC's building at 200 Wellesley St. E.

Toronto Fire evacuated 40 units on the ninth floor because of the fire.  All tenants from the ninth floor, including the tenant of the unit where the fire started, escaped unharmed. Two tenants from other floors were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

The unit where the fire started sustained heavy smoke and water damage and two units on the eighth floor sustained significant water damage. Cleanup and restoration work has already begun. Toronto Community Housing staff are working with all evacuated households to ensure they have a place to stay tonight if required. We are confident that the majority of tenants will be able to return to their homes tonight.

Toronto Community Housing is fully cooperating with Toronto Fire Services, which is investigating the cause of the fire. Toronto Fire has confirmed that the fire alarm system was working at the time of the fire.

200 Wellesley St. E. is a 29-storey highrise building with 719 units. It is located east of Yonge St. in downtown Toronto.
