Dealing with heavy rainfall

Dealing with heavy rainfall

When there is heavy rain, it can cause flooding and power outages. It is important to be prepared so that you can stay safe after a rain storm.
Large rain storms can cause flooding, especially in low-lying areas. Flash floods may happen without warning and heavy rain may cause sewers to back up.

Keeping safe during flooding

If you are indoors:

  • Stay inside and do not travel unless absolutely necessary
  • Keep children and pets indoors

If you are outdoors:

  • Seek shelter right away
  • Stay away from lakes, rivers, streams, creeks and low-lying areas

If your home is flooding:

  • If you are able to, move furniture and other valuables to prevent water damage
  • If you have the ability to do so, and can do it safely, turn off your furnace, gas and electricity

Never step into a flooded room. Water may be in contact with your electrical outlets, appliances or cords. This means that the water could shock or electrocute you.

In a life-threatening emergency, always call 9-1-1 first. If you experience flooding or a power outage in your unit, call the Client Care Centre at 416-981-5500 right away. The Client Care Centre is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
