Statement from Toronto Community Housing on Neilson Road Fire

TORONTO, February 5, 2016�Toronto Community Housing has released the following statement from Board Chair Bud Purves and President and CEO (Interim) Greg Spearn regarding the fire that occurred at 1315 Neilson Road today.�

�We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life today at 1315 Neilson Road. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who perished, those who were injured and the residents and staff of the building. �

�Toronto Community Housing takes the safety of residents very seriously. We are assisting and fully cooperating with the investigation into the cause of the fire, which is being led by the Office of the Fire Marshall.�

�Our staff are at the building tonight, along with staff of the City�s Office of Emergency Management and the Red Cross, to provide assistance and support to residents.�

�The fire alarm system was working at the time of the fire. We conduct monthly inspections of all fire safety systems at our buildings, and the most recent inspection at 1315 Neilson Road conducted on January 22, 2016 found all systems in working order and no fire code violations.�

�We thank Toronto Fire Services, Toronto Paramedic Services, Toronto Police Service, and the Red Cross for their quick and effective actions today in responding to the fire and supporting residents. We also thank federal MP Gary Anandasangaree, Councillor Raymond Cho, the Office of Emergency Management, the Red Cross, community members and the many Toronto Community Housing staff who came to the building today to lend their assistance and support.� �
