Statement by Toronto Community Housing Regarding the Thistletown shooting

TORONTO, September 18, 2012 Toronto Community Housing President and CEO Gene Jones and Board Chair Bud Purves have issued this statement in the aftermath of the shooting that occurred in the Thistletown community.

We are saddened by this act of violence, which affects every member of our communities. On behalf of all employees and the board of directors, we want to express our support for the local community in the aftermath of this tragic event. 

Toronto Community Housing is working closely with Toronto Police Service to assist them with their investigation. Staff are in the community working alongside the city's crisis team to assist residents who require support.

Everyone deserves to live in a safe community. We are committed to doing whatever it takes to ensure our residents feel safe in their homes, including redeploying our Community Safety Unit, starting eviction proceedings against individuals living in our communities who are involved in criminal activity, and working with all our community partners to engage youth in positive activities.

Thistletown is a townhouse community owned and operated by Toronto Community Housing. It is located in the Jamestown Crescent neighbourhood near Islington Avenue and Albion Road.
