Statement by Toronto Community Housing on 5 Flemington Rd. fire

December 05, 2017

TORONTO, December 5, 2017—Toronto Community Housing has issued a statement concerning the fire that occurred last night at 5 Flemington Rd. in Lawrence Heights.

Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the person who perished in this tragic fire, as well as with the two persons still in hospital, their family and the entire Lawrence Heights community at this difficult time. Our team members are onsite in Lawrence Heights today to support tenants and assist with the response to the fire.

We thank Toronto Fire Services for their quick action in putting out the fire and Toronto Paramedic Services for transporting the three injured persons to hospital.

The fire was contained within one unit on the first floor. We are fully cooperating with the investigation of the fire being led by Toronto Fire Services and the Ontario Fire Marshal. The fire alarm and life safety systems were working at the time of the fire and the required checks and logs were current.

Tenant safety is top priority for TCHC. Our team members were onsite immediately upon learning about the fire to support tenants. After the building was evacuated because of heavy smoke, we organized an air quality assessment to determine when it would be safe for tenants to return to the building.

Tenants of the second and third floors have returned to their homes. TCHC arranged for temporary accommodation last night for nine households from the first floor and we will continue to provide supports to tenants displaced by the fire until they can safely return to their homes.

Containment and restoration vendors have begun work at the building today. We have no information on the cause of the fire or the estimated cost of the damages to the unit where the fire occurred.
