Toronto Community Housing welcomes Toronto and East York Community Council's strong endorsement of the Alexandra Park revitalization.
At their June 13th meeting, Toronto and East York Community Council unanimously approved the Official Plan Amendment for the Alexandra Park and Atkinson Housing Co-operative revitalization. The Official Plan Amendment provides the policy direction needed to achieve the 12 to 15 year revitalization.
The approved plan proposes the revitalization of Alexandra Park and Atkinson Housing Co-operative with zero displacement of existing residents.
Several residents of Alexandra Park and members of the Atkinson Housing Co-operative spoke in support of the Official Plan Amendment.
Dianne Williams has lived in Alexandra Park for 18 years. "Our revitalization provides us with the opportunity to enhance the vibrancy of Alex Park by providing more employment, a new community centre where we can provide more opportunities to bring people together, and allows for a more integrated mixed income community instead of an isolated neighbourhood," she said.
"I feel good knowing that my community has had the opportunity and power to be part of something great. It almost feels like a privilege to be living in a place where people care to become involved," resident Karon Brembridge said.
The revitalization will involve the demolition and replacement of 333 townhouse and apartment units, the refurbishment of 473 apartment units, the addition of 1,540 market units, and new
ground floor retail. There will also be an extended public street network and two new public parks.
The revitalization plan will now go to Toronto City Council for consideration on July 11 or 12.
