High blood pressure and diabetes are nothing new to the seniors living in CHU 18's Arleta Manor. What is new to the tenants is the monthly visits from registered nurses.
Since late last year, nurses have been visiting the building on a monthly basis - providing care and education to tenants who have high blood pressure and/or diabetes.
The visits were organized by Tenant Representatives Assunta Di Giovanni and Esther Davis through the Arleta Manor Capacity Building Work Group. The group was put together by Toronto Public Health. Its members include the two Tenant Representatives, Toronto Community Housing staff, Northwood Neighborhood Services and Black Creek Community Health Centre.
In 2000, the World Health Organization estimated that over 177 million people had diabetes. By 2025, this figure will top 300 million.
