Ice Storm Recovery Update #9

TORONTO, December 28, 2013-Toronto Community Housing continues to operate under our Emergency Response Plan in response to the recent ice storm.
  • Power was restored yesterday to 415 Driftwood Avenue and 35 Shoreham Drive, containing 449 units, which had been without power since the storm. All high-rise buildings affected by the ice storm have been restored to full power.
  • Power has also been restored to 1400 Bathurst Street and 177 Pendrith Street, which lost power on Friday.
  • As of 12:00 p.m. there are several individual town homes distributed across the city, containing 50 units, which are still affected by power outages.
  • We continue to provide 24-hour support to affected residents until power has been restored to all our units.
  • Our staff and volunteers continue to deliver food and supplies to affected buildings, and to check in on our residents and respond to any needs.
  • As power is restored to buildings, technicians are being dispatched to ensure that heat, water and other essential building services are restarting properly.
  • We are monitoring situations where there is loss of power at buildings that had previously had full power, and dispatching staff to support residents as needed.
  • Residents can call the 24-hour Client Care Centre at 416 981-5500 to inquire about whether power has been restored to a specific building. Agents will provide the most up-to-date information that is available.
  • When a building has been without heat for some time, frozen pipes are a concern. To minimize the potential for flooding or other damage, we ask residents to confirm as soon as possible after returning to their units that heat and water systems are working properly.
  • Residents should turn on all taps once they return home. If no water comes out the tap, or if there are signs of water damage, we ask residents to report this immediately to the 24-hour Client Care Centre at 416-981-5500.
  • Our priority continues to be providing for our most vulnerable residents, and we continue to connect residents with medical needs, such as oxygen or dialysis treatments, with the Community Care Access Centre.
  • Additional personnel continue to be assigned to the Client Care Centre to handle the increased call volume.

We encourage our residents to report incidents that have occurred on Toronto Community Housing property through the 24-hour Client Care Centre by phone at 416-981-5500 or by email at help@torontohousing.ca.

Residents are reminded to stay away from downed wires and trees that may have an electrical charge. Please report downed wires by calling Toronto Hydro's operation centre at 416-542-8000.

Residents are reminded that 911 is for emergencies only. For all other incidents where police are required, call the non-emergency number at 416-808-2222.
