On January 12, 2010, Haiti experienced a devastating earthquake. According to the UN, there are an estimated three million people in Haiti in need of aid.
"We are deeply saddened by the immense loss and tragedy", said Keiko Nakamura, CEO, Toronto Community Housing. "While it is not possible for us to be there on the ground helping, we can show our support by donating to organizations that specialize in disaster relief."
Both staff and tenants at Toronto Community Housing have expressed a desire to be a part of the Haitian relief effort. Toronto Community Housing's Youth Ambassadors have already begun their campaign and have selected UNICEF as their relief organization. The Youth Ambassadors will be canvassing at Toronto Community Housing offices, Housing Connections and hsi solutions. The youth have also set up an online donation page via UNICEF.
We will also be looking into supporting other relief agencies that are engaged in crisis response work on the ground.
In the long term, Toronto Community Housing will be exploring different ways in which we can support organizations involved in the rebuilding of Haiti. Our Youth Ambassadors have already expressed interest in helping out with projects that will make Haiti healthy and sustainable for years to come.
