Dan Harrison Community Complex Celebrates 30 Years

August 22, 2006

On hand to celebrate were Toronto Community Housing CEO Derek Ballantyne, the Honourable George Smitherman, MPP for Toronto Centre, City Councillor Pam McConnell, and agency partners such as the Sherbourne Health Centre, Streets to Homes and the Fred Victor Centre. The event was organized and hosted by the Dan Harrison 30th Anniversary Steering Committee which was comprised of Dan Harrison tenants, TCHC staff, representatives from the Sherbourne Health Centre and the Sherbourne Lanes Association.

As part of the celebrations, the anniversary steering committee presented a display of photos, past and present, of the buildings and tenants at Dan Harrison. In addition, an expert panel featuring former Toronto Mayor John Sewell, architect Catherine Nasmith and social sousing researcher and activist Michael Shapcott recalled the historic events of 30 years ago when leading citizens, including the late Jane Jacobs and John Sewell, intervened with tenants to save the historic houses on Sherbourne Street between Dundas and Gerrard from demolition and worked with the City of Toronto to establish the Dan Harrison Community Complex as the City of Torontos first social housing complex.

A buffet and live music followed as tenants, staff and community partners celebrated into the evening.
