Media reports are stating that Toronto Community Housing is selling 22 houses and threatening to evict tenants after promising them they could stay.
While Toronto Community Housing is proposing the sale of 22 single-family houses with significant capital repairs needs, to reinvest the proceeds for much-needed housing repairs elsewhere in our portfolio, steps are being taken to minimize impacts on tenants.
Toronto Community Housing will honour all existing documented commitments made to tenants. That means that where documented commitments exist, houses would only be sold after tenants choose to move out.
Other steps being taken to minimize impacts on tenants include finding alternate housing in our portfolio for subsidized tenants and informing market rent tenants about other options in our portfolio.
Selling the houses would raise an estimated $15.7 million for much-needed capital repairs. The proposal would ensure affordable housing levels stay the same by replacing seven rent-geared-to-income units located in the houses with an equal number of rent supplements.
