The stories were riveting, the food delectable and the smiles endless. On a rainy, damp Saturday afternoon in the Community Hall of the Regent Park Community Centre, 10 people from the Central Operating Units were recognized for their years of hard work and contribution to community building.
For a couple of hours, everyone inside, amidst the sweet sounds of Regent Park's resident child band, The Youngstas, and the spicy aroma of Caribbean delights, forgot about the rain and dampness outside. Many friends, family members and staff from the Central Operating Units were on hand to pay tribute each honouree.
The event was made even more special for the participants because it was being broadcasted live via podcast by Regent Park Focus (www.regentparkfocus.com). This format gave the honouree a platform to share their stories and to encourage others to work in their communities. Check it out at http://www.regentpark.tv/tchc2009.
A special thank you to the folks at Regent Park Focus, the Youngstas, the Central Community Health Team and of course the honourees for making this indeed a fitting end to the month long celebration of African History Month at Toronto Community Housing.
