Building on the success of the pilot program, Derek Ballantyne, Toronto Community Housing CEO, joins Ucal Powell, Executive Secretary Treasurer of the Carpenter's Union, Central Ontario Regional Council and Eddie Thornton, Executive Director of Training, Carpenters' Local 27 Joint Apprenticeship & Training Trust Fund Inc. to honour the 13 graduates of the innovative pre-apprenticeship program that provides training and employment opportunities for at risk youth.
In the summer of 2005, in an effort to offer hope in the wake of increased violence, Toronto Community Housing partnered with the Carpenters & Allied Workers, Local 27 to design this program for youth who live in social housing. The goal of the program is to stimulate economic development in low-income communities and offer careers in construction to young people who are socially isolated by poverty. Representatives of all the organizations who helped to get the initiative up and running will celebrate the success of the grads including: Housing Services Inc. (HSI), YMCA Employment & Newcomer Services, and the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities.
The pre-apprenticeship program included 10 weeks of hands-on training with instructors from Carpenters & Allied Workers, Local 27. Youth began with two weeks of health and safety training in the classrooms at the Training Centre for the Carpenters & Allied Workers, Local 27. They then moved to job sites provided by Toronto Community Housing for practical training with instruction by the Carpenters and supervision by HSI in drywall, carpentry, general maintenance, landscaping, painting, how to work on a team and general life/work skills.
