Heating and Cooling Tips

  • Don't set your thermostat at a colder setting than normal when you turn on your air conditioner. It will not cool your home any faster and could result in excessive cooling and, therefore, unnecessary expense.
  • Set your thermostat as low as is comfortable in the winter and as high as is comfortable in the summer.
  • Clean warm-air registers, baseboard heaters, and radiators as needed; make sure they're not blocked by furniture, carpeting, or drapes.
  • Place heat-resistant radiator reflectors between exterior walls and the radiators

Recycling tips

  • Recycling one aluminum beverage can saves enough energy to run a 100-watt bulb for 20 hours, a computer for three hours or a TV for two hours.
  • To break down at the landfill, plastics require 100 to 400 years and a glass bottle will take approximately one million years.
  • Manufacturing one ton of office and computer paper with recycled paper stock can save between 3,000 and 4,000 kilowatt hours over the same ton of paper made with virgin wood products.
  • Preventing one ton of paper waste saves between 15 and 17 mature trees.
