    Meet Tom

In July 2023, Tom Hunter was appointed Interim President and Chief Executive Officer at Toronto Community Housing (TCHC). A respected community builder, visionary leader and dedicated advocate for vulnerable populations, Hunter transitioned into his interim role at TCHC after serving as Chief Executive Officer at Toronto Seniors Housing Corporation (TSHC).

With an impressive track record in executive leadership and a deep commitment to community well-being, Hunter is a well-respected voice in the affordable housing sector. He also has strong working relationships with the City of Toronto and other levels of government.

During the past year, Hunter worked closely with TCHC as the Toronto Seniors Housing Corporation was established. Throughout this work, Hunter gained an in-depth understanding of the shared services between the two organizations. His selection as TSHC’s inaugural CEO is a testament to his decades of experience marked by pioneering initiatives, impactful partnerships and a steadfast dedication to improving the lives of tenants.

Prior to TSHC, Hunter was Chief Executive Officer at CityHousing Hamilton (2015-22). In this role, he spearheaded the $1 billion housing portfolio, representing 14,000 tenants. Under his guidance, the organization witnessed significant achievements as he provided oversight to a $62 million annual operating budget. Hunter was the driving force behind several CityHousing Hamilton redevelopment projects that focused on maximizing the social benefits of key public properties. In doing so, he championed endeavors that uplifted neighborhoods and offered a higher quality of life for all residents.

Throughout his career, Hunter has displayed a remarkable ability to secure government grants and incentives, collecting more than $25 million for energy conservation initiatives at CityHousing Hamilton that aligned with broader sustainability goals. Hunter's strategic leadership also secured $195 million for the organization through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation Co-Investment Fund, paving the way for repairs and renewals across the portfolio. These efforts not only sustained deep affordability for residents, but also increased accessibility and optimized energy efficiency.

Hunter's background extends beyond his role at CityHousing Hamilton. His diverse experience includes leadership roles at Wentworth Lodge and Niagara Region, where he managed long-term care homes and senior services.

At the heart of Hunter's approach lies a dedication to tenant voice and community partnerships. Work on the Integrated Service Model at both TSHC and CityHousing Hamilton reflect a commitment to tenant empowerment and community engagement.

Hunter graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor of Science degree and holds a Master’s of Health Science from the University of Toronto. He currently serves on several boards, including the Ontario Non-Profit Housing Association and the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
