Internship Opportunities with Toronto Community Housing Corporation
Summer 2009
BACKGROUND:
Toronto Community Housing Corporation ("Toronto Community Housing") is one of the largest social housing providers in North America, and provides social and market based housing services to about 164,000 tenants in communities across Toronto. The mandate of Toronto Community Housing is to provide quality housing for low and moderate income households, and offers both "rent-geared to income" ("RGI") and moderate market rent units. Toronto Community Housing's portfolio includes about 58,000 housing units, and consists of high, mid and low-rise apartment buildings, town homes, rooming houses, and detached and semi-detached houses.
Toronto Community Housing is engaged in the management of social housing properties and provides community support services. Toronto Community Housing's legal department consist of 2 general counsels and 4 legal counsels practicing in the areas of real estate law, corporate law, and litigation. In addition, the legal unit is supported with litigation clerk, real estate clerk and 2 paralegals.
DESCRIPTION OF INTERNSHIP:
Toronto Community Housing welcomes internship applications for Summer 2009 (July to August).
The Candidate will be closely supervised by in-house general and legal counsels, and will have an opportunity to meet with and interact with legal and non-legal staff. The Candidate will have the opportunity to job shadow in-house counsel (real estate, corporate and litigation practices), and paralegals, as well and real estate and litigation clerks.
As an intern, the Candidate will be expected to be involved in a wide array of legal issues and problems being confronted by Toronto Community Housing, from real estate, litigation to corporate matters. The work of an intern may include:
• Research and preparation of legal memoranda on issues of importance to Toronto Community Housing;
• Preparation of documents pertinent to a legal proceeding;
• Observations and assisting legal counsel and paralegals at trials, tribunals, hearings and appeals;
• Assistance in development of public policies affecting Toronto Community Housing;
• Designing and holding workshops for staff on legal issues of interest.
The internship program is directed at exposing students to a career in law, to help develop critical thinking skills, and to develop and exercise leadership skills.
REQUIREMENTS:

• Be someone who takes initiative
• Entering into or Returning to full time post-secondary studies in the fall.
• Show a demonstrated commitment or interest in a career in law
HOURS: 35 hours per week
REMUNERATION: $18 per hour
