Providing Opportunities for Youth

Youth ParachuteIn 2006, Toronto Community Housing reviewed its children and youth programs and identified the need to realign services to better connect children to existing services in their communities and ensure that barriers to programs are eliminated.

Since most of Toronto Community Housing’s resources for children are dedicated to the direct delivery of recreational services, the strategy identifies the need to re-direct resources to youth programs and supports. Youth are not generally well-served in neighbourhoods with large numbers of Toronto Operating units. Implementation will take place over three years and will be done in phases.

In July 2006, Toronto Community Housing approved a new children and youth strategy that charts the direction for these services within the organization.

Strategy Highlights

Over the next three years (2007-2009) Toronto Community Housing will move from direct delivery in children’s programming to enabling and supporting quality youth programming. By 2010, it is anticipated that Toronto Community Housing will decrease its delivery of children’s programs by 80%. At the same time, Toronto Community Housing will increase youth programming from 12 to 35 locations.
