Toronto Community Housing Celebrates the Opening of Daniels Spectrum in Regent Park
TORONTO, September 20, 2012—Torontonians celebrated an important milestone today as Daniels Spectrum, the new Regent Park Arts and Cultural Centre, opened its doors. Representatives from the governments of Canada, Ontario, and City of Toronto, along with Toronto Artscape, The Daniels Corporation and Toronto Community Housing attended the first performances at the new artistic, cultural and social heart of the neighbourhood.
Toronto Community Housing President and CEO Gene Jones joined the CBC's Matt Galloway for a live Metro Morning broadcast in Regent Park to celebrate the opening of the new centre.
"The Regent Park revitalization has been a remarkable success story for Toronto Community Housing and for our partners, including The Daniels Corporation, Artscape and the Regent Park community," said Gene Jones, President and CEO of Toronto Community Housing.
"Daniels Spectrum will be a social and cultural hub for Regent Park residents. But it will also be a beacon. Now that the doors are open to this marvellous facility, people from across the city will come to Regent Park to enjoy and celebrate the arts, gather with their fellow citizens and neighbours, and experience the vitality of a proud, diverse, dynamic community."
The Daniels Spectrum is the realization of a long-term goal for a social and cultural hub for Regent Park residents and a beacon for people from across the city. The development of a new cultural hub was a key element in Regent Park revitalization plans. The City of Toronto, through Toronto Community Housing, provided the land to enable the vision for an arts and cultural centre to become a reality. In 2009, Toronto Community Housing, Artscape and the Daniels Corporation formed a joint venture—the Regent Park Arts Development—to develop and operate the centre in consultation with a community-based advisory committee.
The Regent Park revitalization is an innovative project unlike any other in North America. Revitalization is transforming Regent Park into a successful, mixed-income, mixed-use neighbourhood, offering residents a mix of rental buildings, market condominium buildings, townhomes, commercial space and community facilities.
Toronto Community Housing’s revitalization vision recognizes that building a strong community is about more than just safe, well-maintained affordable housing—vibrant communities also include spaces where neighbours can get to know each others, youth can participate in sports and cultural activities, and local organizations can offer programs for residents.
