Seniors' Month is a chance to recognize and value the contributions made by seniors every day in our communities. The theme this year is Consider the Possibilities.

There are many things going on at Toronto Community Housing during Seniors' Month and many of these are ongoing throughout the year.

Often we partner with a community agency and work with tenants to help plan these events, which include recreational, cultural and social activities. There are also health and educational programs.

Check out some examples below.

CHU 10 - Spadina/Downtown

To celebrate Seniors' Month, there are education programs planned
for seniors at four different buildings.  At Beverley Manor, on June
19, tenants heard about fire prevention. At Collegeview on June
18 the topic was crime prevention. At Kensington Manor on June 23
seniors will be given a presentation on fall prevention.  And at Hydro
Block lounge on Baldwin Street, July 9 there was a fire safety and
prevention seminar.

At Collegeview on June 25, they are holding a SocialCise launch. This event involves the official introduction of the SocialCise program
to tenants and to Toronto Community Housing.  SocialCise is a program
that was conceived from Social Investment funds.  It includes gentle exercise
routines for seniors led by trained instructors.  Other elements of the
program include learning english as a second language in an informal
setting and socializing with other seniors at the end of the workout.

The Hydro Block Tenant Association with support of CHU 10 is hosting
Neighbors Night Out on June 17.  It will include a barbeque, potluck
and recycling reminder. 

CHU 12 - Don River

The Seniors Wellness Fair happened on June 12 at Blair Court in CHU
12 – Don River.  Through the cooperative efforts of staff, tenants and
community partners, the event was a success.  It included 21 displays,
three workshops and over 200 senior tenants from Toronto Community
Housing and the surrounding community. 

CHU 13 - Sherbourne/Dundas

On Monday, June 23, the Minister of Health and Long Term Care,
George Smitherman, will be visiting CHU 13 – Sherbourne/Dundas for an
afternoon tea.  This social event will give senior tenants a chance to
interact with each other and those in the community.

CHU 15 - North Toronto

11:00am, June 24 at the Sherwood, there will be presentation of a plaque awarding Senior friendly designation. 

Sanderling Place plans to show their support for Senior's Month by
holding a barbeque June 25.  The event will encourage a sense of
community and interaction among tenants. 

CHU 21 - Scarborough/Kennedy

Gus Harris Manor intends to conclude the month with a celebration. They will be holding an Asian and South Asian Heritage and Seniors Month celebration
June 25. 

Other Events

June 15, was the 3rd Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). 
It is an opportunity for communities to raise awareness of the
cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder
abuse and neglect.  In support of the United Nations International Plan
of Action, this day aims to promote the significance of elder abuse as
both a public health and human rights issue.  At Toronto Community
Housing, about one third of our tenants are seniors.  World Elder Abuse
Awareness Day is an important one for us to recognize. 

On June 16, In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Family Service
Toronto launched a safe haven for seniors experiencing abuse.

June 19 PEACE (Prevention of Elder Abuse Abuse Coalition
Etobicoke-York) hosted a community health fair event at York
Fairbanks Centre on Dufferin Street.  There will be a variety of
displays from local community organizations and agencies.  Exhibitors
include: Hand Massages by Giulianna's, Royal Bank-Dufferin and Stayner
branch, Shoppers Drug Mart, St. Joseph's Heath Care Centre-Dietician
and Wellness, Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre, Toronto
Public Health-Falls and Injurty Prevention and Toronto School of
Traditional Chinese Medicine.  Tenants from Doug Saunders and the
surrounding neighborhood will be attending.
