Tenants Win Prestigious Awards
Veich Jarrett, a tenant from Trimbee Court, and Barbara Cooper, from Neilson Hall Seniors Residence, were honoured by Mayor David Miller on Tuesday, December 12 at 5:00 p.m. at City Hall. These two noble tenants received the Community Service Volunteer Award.
Veich is an inspiration to youth in his community. Through his leadership, Veich has established a peer tutoring support group and engaged youth in numerous projects such as, neighbourhood beautification and a festival of lights that was featured last December on CityTV’s Livable City series. Veich is an excellent role model for youth in Trimbee Court, and across the community.
Barbara Cooper is president of her social club, a great grandmother and an incredible leader. Over the years she has garnered affection and respect for organizing events, partaking in committees and helping residents cope with loneliness. Her daily acts of kindness have had an impact on many people.
Tenant Achievement Recognition Award
Marnie North, a Toronto Community Housing resident in Blair Court, graciously received a 2006 Tenant Achievement Recognition Award from the Ontario Non-Profit Housing Association (ONPHA) at their annual conference on November 21, 2006. This award honours tenants who make meaningful contributions to their communities and further the cause of non-profit housing.
Marnie is well known throughout the community for her bingo parties and delivering Meals on Wheels. She is also an avid fundraiser. Marnie is always busy making crafts and knitting to raise money for the cancer ward at Sick Kids Hospital, and for the past 20 years, she has completed the Terry Fox Run.
