Participatory budgeting in action!
On March 31, 2007, more than 175 tenants, staff and guests participated in the fourth annual Allocation Day for the $1.8 million tenant allocated capital fund.
Tenant delegates, one for each Community Housing Unit, took their places in the North York Civic Centre Council Chambers and presented their passionate proposals. They were hoping to get a piece of the $1.8 million pie for various things in their communities. Proposals included requests for new lighting, security upgrades and community gardens.
Following the presentations, tenant delegates reviewed a display for each proposal. Then, the tenant delegates used the new electronic voting system to allocate their votes. They had to cast 10 votes each and could not vote for their own projects.
In the end, 17 Community Housing Units received funding for their projects. Some of the successful projects were:
- upgrades to a community recreation centre used mostly for youth programming at Jane and Lawrence;
- installation of lighting in Lawrence Heights to improve community safety; and
- new playground equipment for children in three different communities.
