Toronto Community Housing youth conclude 3rd Mock Trial

September 14, 2006

Youth from the Sheppard Magellan community were able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused suspect, the fictional Joe Wilson, had indeed possessed a firearm.

The Flemingdon Park youth put up an excellent and sharp defense of their client, drawing surprised reactions from the packed Old City Hall Courthouse gallery. Eventually after brief, but laboured deliberations, the jury was able to find the defendant guilty, igniting audience responses of elation and disbelief.

Judge Kofi Barnes who presided over the case, offered words of thanks and praise for the professionalism, dedication and leadership that all the youth showed through their participation with the OJEN program this summer. He acknowledged that they each sacrificed their summer nights preparing with real lawyers, Crown attorneys, court managers and staff to for the case and had the makings of professional court officials.

The successful outcomes of the OJEN program were that the youth gained an understanding and education of the courts system, while being engaged positively by real representatives of the court.
