New bikes help build great neighbourhood

August 7, 2010

The Dutch Consulate, ING Direct and Toronto Community Housing will make Saturday, August 7th a memorable day for 47 youth living in the East-end community of Lawrence-Valia.

Youth, between the ages of 6 and 18, will be presented with new bicycles, helmets and locks thanks to donations from ING Direct and the fourth annual Go Green, Go Dutch, Go Bike!, an environmental awareness bike ride and fundraiser held in May.

The ride is an ongoing green- and healthy living partnership to promote cycling as a fun, environmentally friendly mode of transportation.

Over the first three years of the partnership, a total of 78 youth in Lawrence Heights, Chester Le and Swansea Mews received new bicycles and helmets.

Recipients were asked to submit a brief essay on what community safety means to them and how Toronto Community Housing and tenants can work together to make Lawrence Valia a better community.

There will be photo and interview opportunities with youth receiving their bicycles and participating in a bike safety session.
