Toronto Community Housing began operations on January 1, 2002. It was created through the integration of the Toronto Housing Company (THC) and the Metropolitan Toronto Housing Corporation (MTHC).
The Toronto Housing Company and Metropolitan Toronto Housing Corporation had a long history of development and operation of rental housing in all parts of the City. Metropolitan Toronto Housing Corporation traces its origins to the Toronto Housing Authority, a municipal housing corporation originally established to provide low-rent housing in the Regent Park community. Toronto Community Housing brought together the former Metropolitan Toronto Housing Company Ltd (formed in 1954) and Cityhome, the former City of Toronto Non-Profit Housing Corporation (created in 1974).
