About Lawrence Heights Revitalization
Planning for the revitalization of Lawrence Heights kicked off in June 2008. Since then, Toronto Community Housing has involved and engaged Lawrence Heights residents to find out what they want in a revitalized community.
The emerging preferred plan for revitalizing Lawrence Heights reflects months of input gathered from residents, community animators, community and neighbourhood organizations, and the City of Toronto. This plan was unveiled on February 25, 2010.
Toronto Community Housing’s vision for revitalization goes beyond replacing housing in a poor state of repair. We are transforming communities to build great neighbourhoods for everyone.
Plan highlights
The plan will happen gradually, in phases over 20 years. Each phase will include:
- Replacement of Toronto Community Housing (TCH) units in Lawrence Heights
- New market units
- A neighbourhood park
- Opportunities for retail
- Community facilities (e.g. community centre, child care centres, schools, community spaces, etc.)
The plan replaces all 1,208 existing TCH housing units in Lawrence Heights and adds 4,300 to 4,800 market units in the form of townhouses and condominium apartments.
There will be a mix of building types, including townhouses, mid-rise buildings of six to nine stories and taller buildings of up to 20 stories.
Every townhouse, semi-detached and detached home will be replaced with a ground-related unit – that means it will have its own door on the street.
All Lawrence Heights tenants have a right to live in one of the new units that are built as part of the revitalization. Rent will not change - it will continue to be based on income. New homes will have the same number of bedrooms.
All tenants who want to stay in the community will be able to stay throughout revitalization, even if they have to move to another unit in the community temporarily until a new unit is available.
Part of revitalization is creating a Social Development Plan that will look for ways to find opportunities for tenants, like jobs and training, and to make sure that throughout the revitalization process there is a plan for the social development of the neighbourhood.
