Building Improvements

Healthy communities start with good places to live. On average, Toronto Community Housing’s buildings are 37 years old. Toronto Community Housing plans to balance its capital investment in items like life safety equipment and building systems with spending that has a more direct impact on tenants’ quality of life (like replacing old kitchens and bathrooms). Without significant new reserves, Toronto Community Housing will continue to be challenged to keep all units in a good state of repair.

Building Improvement Initiatives

Unit Refurbishment Program

The Unit Refurbishment Program is a direct investment in the upgrade of bathrooms and kitchens (and related unit mechanical systems) to address the poor condition of unit interiors. An investment of $75 million is proposed over three years.

Building Renewal Program

Toronto Community Housing's Building Renewal Program kicked off in 2005 and will continue at an accelerated pace in 2006. The Building Renewal Program puts into action our Community Management Plan commitment to improve and maintain the condition of our properties. Equally important it is a key element of our Green Plan. It will deliver energy savings and help reduce our impact on the environment.
