Investing in Buildings

Toronto Community Housing is committed to delivering quality housing that improves the lives and living conditions of residents and communities. Our goal is to help create strong neighbourhoods where every tenant is connected to opportunities to succeed.

Revitalization

Part of this commitment is the revitalization of existing neighbourhoods, such as the successful ongoing revitalization in Regent Park in downtown Toronto. We are continuing these efforts through the revitalization of Lawrence Heights and Alexandra Park.

Our vision for revitalization goes beyond replacing housing in a poor state of repair. We are transforming communities to build great neighbourhoods for everyone.

Adding market units to these neighbourhoods creates mixed-income communities. Revitalization can attract investment in the form of new or improved amenities like schools, parks and improved transit. It also increases local jobs and training for residents and may create opportunities for affordable home ownership.

We remain committed to engagement processes that put tenants first and give them a real say over decisions that affect their lives.

That’s why throughout the planning process for revitalization in any community, we involve and engage residents to find out what they want in a revitalized community.

New housing

Another part of Toronto Community Housing’s commitment to delivering quality housing is the construction of new affordable rental housing in communities like the West Don Lands and the Railway Lands in downtown Toronto – providing opportunities for low- and moderate-income households to be part of these great new neighbourhoods.

Community Revitalization

Don Mount Court/Rivertowne

The revitalized Don Mount Court/Rivertowne community is Canada’s first public housing development rebuilt as a mixed-income community. It has transformed one of the city’s oldest downtown communities into a dynamic, new mixed-income neighbourhood.

Building a Plan in Alexandra Park

Starting in August 2009, Toronto Community Housing staff and a team of consultants led by Urban Strategies Inc. began working with Alexandra Park residents to have a conversation about their community and what revitalization could mean for them. Alexandra Park includes the Atkinson Co-op and the buildings at 20 Vanauley and 91 Augusta.

Building Improvement Initiatives

Unit Refurbishment Program

The Unit Refurbishment Program is a direct investment in the upgrade of bathrooms and kitchens (and related unit mechanical systems) to address the poor condition of unit interiors. An investment of $75 million is proposed over three years.

Building Renewal Program

Toronto Community Housing's Building Renewal Program kicked off in 2005 and will continue at an accelerated pace in 2006. The Building Renewal Program puts into action our Community Management Plan commitment to improve and maintain the condition of our properties. Equally important, it is a key element of our Green Plan. It will deliver energy savings and help reduce our impact on the environment.
